The Hidden Struggles Behind Every Success: Overcoming Failure and Embracing the Journey
Success is not just a destination but a journey filled with struggles and obstacles.
Just like a seed planted in the soil, it takes time, effort, and patience to grow and reach our full potential. For young people, the journey to success is often crowded with the struggles of failure. But failure is not the end, it is merely a step on the path to success. Like the seed that falls to the ground and sprouts roots, failure is an opportunity to grow and learn.
Once upon a time, there was a young boy who grew up in a small village called Jinkfuin in the North-Western part of Cameroon. Like many, he was not born into opportunity. He grew up bearing the brunt of crop failures on his mother’s farm from time to time. One of the first words he understood pretty early was “famine” — spoken in his mother tongue. He recalls vividly the despair with which his mother broke such news to them and the consequences that would follow for himself and his four siblings. The Consequences of having to spend most of his days hungry. The Consequences of having to borrow cornmeal and beans from neighbours whose crops had not failed as much as theirs.
This was his journey to purpose. His moment of epiphany which started as a simple search for answers to the regular & dwindling yields in his mum’s small farm. It climaxed in his understanding of climate change which is the pre-eminent global challenge of our times. This phenomenon was not only the cause of harsh famines that they experienced growing up but the worsening famines experienced by hundreds of millions across Africa and the world.
Despite the poverty and lack of resources around him, he never lost hope and always dreamed of becoming a solution provider to the environmental change challenges one day. His journey was far from easy. Every day, he walked miles to school without shoes on his feet, facing the harsh elements of nature. But he never gave up, determined to receive an education and break the cycle of poverty as he find solutions to impact communities.
After finishing high school, the boy’s parents could not afford to send him to university. But he worked hard finally managing to enroll in a professional physics degree program. However, his struggles did not end there. He applied for countless scholarships but was rejected time and time again. But he did not let failure defeat him. He persevered, and eventually, his persistence paid off. He was awarded a scholarship and finally achieved his dream of becoming a teacher.
This is a reminder that success is not just a destination, but a journey. And like a ship navigating through rough waters, we must learn to weather the storms of life and never give up on our dreams.
The boy’s story is a powerful reminder that behind every success and every glory, there is a story of struggles and hardships. We must learn to appreciate and embrace these struggles, for they shape us into the strong and resilient individuals we are meant to be.
So what can young people do to overcome failure and achieve success?
Here are some recommendations:
1. Embrace failure and learn from it. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, for it is through failure that we gain valuable lessons and experiences.
2. Persevere and never give up. Success is not achieved overnight, it takes time and effort. Keep pushing forward and never lose sight of your goals.
3. Surround yourself with positive and supportive people. Seek out mentors who can guide you and provide encouragement along the way.
4. Focus on the process, not just the outcome. Success is not just about reaching a destination, it is about the journey and the growth that comes with it.
5. Remember that behind every success there is a hidden struggle. Appreciate and embrace the struggles, for they are what shape us into strong and resilient individuals.
Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, our struggles and failures are what give us the strength and resilience to reach new heights. And just like the sun that brings light after a dark night, our struggles will eventually give way to the triumphs and victories that define our lives.
So to the youth of today, remember that success is a journey filled with struggles and failures. Embrace these challenges, overcome them, and never give up on your dreams. For just like a seed that grows into a magnificent tree, you too have the potential to achieve greatness. And like the boy, you too can become a shining example of perseverance and determination.
So to every young person facing struggles and hardships, remember that you are not alone. Keep pushing forward, one step at a time, and never lose sight of your goals. For just like the light of the stars, success may seem distant, but it is always within reach.
